Managing Mycotoxin Risk in Feed Through the Monsoon

Mycotoxin problems are storage problems long before they become clinical problems. Moisture above thirteen percent in stored maize during humid months is an open invitation to mould growth.

Sample properly: multiple probe points across the lot, composited and mixed, then subsampled. A single grab sample tells you almost nothing about a heterogeneous consignment.

Physical controls come first, including dry, ventilated storage on pallets, first-in-first-out rotation and cleaning between lots. Binders are a supplement to good storage, not a substitute for it.

Watch flock signals such as pale carcasses, reduced intake, poor pigmentation and vaccine failure. These often appear before any laboratory result arrives.
